The Toy Chest and Other Lost Objects / by Keri Lopez

John Jr opened the box in the corner. It was metallic, worn, dusted over. But the contents were clean, pristine - like new. I wonder how that happened, he thought. He examined the edges of the box. A pristine seal. It must have kept everything inside safe.

He took out the objects one by one. A rag doll. A mirror. Board games. Bingo. A stack of cards with characters on them. Assorted sports equipment. A handheld game.

I wonder why they left these.
